MARIETTA CITY SCHOOLS
DISTRICT SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN

Marietta City Schools have been designated by the state of Ohio as in need of improvement. We received this designation because we have not met AYP (Annual Yearly Progress) in two subgroups: students with disabilities and students who are economically disadvantaged. These two groups of students did not make the same amount of progress, as did the average or typical student. This has occurred for two years in a row on the state of Ohio achievement tests.

Since Marietta City Schools have been placed in school improvement we have been challenged to create a district school improvement plan. The plan describes what we will do to reduce the achievement gap between the subgroups and the average students.

Representatives from the teaching staff, support staff, special education, gifted, and administration have met numerous times throughout the 2009-2010 school year to develop the three year plan that will guide MCS toward improvement. Information taken from data about our district was used to determine the focus of the improvement plan. The plan has three goals that address reading, math, and our school climate. Under each goal are strategies and action steps that describe what will be done over the next three years to improve student achievement in MCS.

After the district level plan was developed, each school developed a plan showing how the district goals would be fulfilled at that individual school. Individual school plans outline what will occur at each building to help ensure the success of ALL students.

You may review the district plan below. Also, under each school, you will find the plan specific to that building. As the plan progresses, MCS will be asking for parent and community input and involvement to help ensure the success of this plan.

Listed below is a link to the Ohio Department of Education's website, if you wish to learn more about student achievement in Marietta City Schools. Once you have logged onto the site, please refer to the bottom left hand corner of the page. Here you will find a listing for FAMILIES. Under families you can click on School Performance and Statewide Testing Web Site to gain more detailed information and learn ways parents can assist their child.

If you have questions about MCS school improvement plan, you can talk with any building principal or contact Joe Finley at 740-374-6514, or ma_jfinley@seovec.org.
