Phoenix award

The Marietta City School District is proud to announce that its School Resource Officer Rob Sury’s K9 partner, Phoenix, has successfully completed basic obedience training and received a certificate from the Parkersburg Obedience Training Club.

Phoenix, who is a one year old Berne Doodle, is extremely popular with the students of MCSD and will be a valuable asset to both school safety and overall morale among the students. Over the last 8 weeks she took this fast track course to help reinforce her bond with Officer Sury and equip her with essential skills for her time with the district. These skills include but weren’t limited to:

Walking closely and obediently beside Sury.
Remaining seated on command.
Staying in place, even when distracted.
Returning to Sury when called.

All of these important skills will also serve as anchors for overstimulation or just chaotic situations that can arise for animals in a school setting.

Despite the added excitement of a small gathering of spectators on hand, that included an MES Principal, MES Counselor and the Chief of the Marietta Police Department, Phoenix performed exceptionally well during her evaluation.

Marietta City School District Superintendent, Brad Silvus, discussed what an amazing resource Officer Sury and Phoenix are for the district. “The Safety of our schools is our number one priority and we are so fortunate to have Officer Sury and his K-9 partner Phoenix. We are very proud of Phoenix and know she is going to continue to brighten our student’s day whenever she is in one of our buildings.”

We would like to thank the Parkersburg Training Club for their work with Phoenix. They are located in Vienna and offers a wide range of classes including multiple agility and obedience classes.  For more information about them you can visit their website at https://www.parkersburgotc.org/ .
