Marietta City School District welcomes motivational guest speaker, Rushia Brown, who will present a session for Phillips School, Washington School, Marietta Elementary School, and Marietta High School. Brown will also do a session with the public from 7:00 p.m. until 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, February 6th, in the TMI Center located in the high school.
Brown was born in the Bronx, New York, and was raised in South Carolina. She attended Furman University where she pursued her education and passion for playing basketball. In high school and college basketball, Brown earned various accolades which transitioned into a ten year professional career where she played overseas in the European League and a seven year career in the WNBA. Brown played six years for the Cleveland Rockers, which was Cleveland’s first professional women’s basketball team, and one year for the Charlotte Sting.
After Brown’s professional basketball career, she pursued her passion for helping people including founding several companies, including the Women’s Professional Basketball Alumnae. This organization assists women in transitioning their careers after professional basketball. Brown founded a nonprofit organization called ServCom that provides educational activities for communities, encouraged minorities to start their own businesses through a publication called Young Black Entrepreneur Magazine, and created a family business called Hearts & Hands Catering, which provides healthy meals for people.
Brown connects with audiences and sparks passion among youth as well as adults with her inspirational presentation. Christian Hudspeth, Communications Coordinator for the district, discussed the impact speakers like Brown can have on the study body. “Speakers like this are an amazing opportunity for our students to learn from those with an incredible work ethic and unique life experiences and Rushia Brown most certainly is one of these individuals. Her dedication to her academic, athletic and professional careers has served her extremely well and I believe our students will learn a great deal from hearing her story."
Brown will be attending Phillips School on Tuesday, February 6th, and will speak with students for two sessions, the first from 2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the second from 2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.. On Wednesday, February 7th, Brown will speak with kindergarten students from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and first and second grade from 10:15 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Washington School. Later that day, Brown will also attend Marietta Elementary School from 1:45 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. On Thursday, February 8th, Brown will speak with students in Marietta High School from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the auditorium and also visit the elementary school again from 1:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.
