Marietta City School’s Eclipse Safety Sheet 2024
We are as excited as many of you to enjoy this historic eclipse on Monday April 8, 2024. We’d like to first thank Eye Care Associates in Marietta for their generous donation of glasses for all of our students at all four buildings. We wanted to compile a list of safety tips and resources for our parents, staff and students regarding this historic event.
In addition to following instructions included with the glasses, if any glasses are damaged or scratched they should be replaced with a new pair.
Glasses need to be worn and completely cover the eyes of anyone looking at the partial eclipse at any point during the day. Doing so without the safety glasses can severely and/or permanently damage your eyes. Students who wear glasses should wear the safety glasses over their original glasses.
Since we are outside the path of totality, there will not be any point during the day that it's safe for students to view any phase of the eclipse without your solar filter glasses. That means they should not remove their solar filters at any point when looking at the stages of the eclipse. The eclipse will last from 2:00-4:30 p.m. with the maximum coverage of the eclipse occurring at 3:15 p.m. (96 percent coverage).
Do not look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars, or other optical device.
Similarly, do not look at the sun through a camera, a telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while using your eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewer — the concentrated solar rays will damage the filter and enter your eye(s), causing serious injury.
These rules apply to students from MHS who will be returning home during portions of the eclipse. Talk with your students about these rules to ensure that they understand these apply both inside and outside of the school setting.
