Solar Eclipse Plan for Marietta Elementary School
Monday, April 8, 2024
Hello MES families, we hope you have had a wonderful break so far! We wanted to reach out and give you an update on our plan for Monday, April 8th at Marietta Elementary School.
We know that the historic solar eclipse might be something you’d like to experience with your children, that’s why any student who is missing the day to view this with their family will be considered an excused absence. In order for this to be considered excused, parents will still need to call the school and report the absence like they normally would.
Since safety will be our top priority, the last recess of the day will end at 1:30 p.m.. It will be teacher discretion on if they go outside to view the eclipse during school hours. Some teachers may choose to view the NASA live stream eclipse, while others might take their classroom out for a couple of minutes. All students will still receive a pair of safety glasses and proper instruction on how to safely wear them and what NOT to do.
Since we will be releasing during the timeframe that the eclipse will take place, we wanted to cover our dismissal plans below.
End of the Day Dismissal Plan:
Walkers: Students who are walking at the end of the day to meet up with parents will need to have their glasses out and ready to put on if necessary. Students will not be stopping to view the eclipse as they depart for the day. We will have staff members located along the walkway down the hill to help ensure that students are safely getting to their parents. If the child and parent want to view the eclipse together at this point that will be their choice.
Car riders: Car riders will report to the gym so they are not standing outside. Parents/guardians that are picking their children up at the top of the hill will follow the same procedures as normal. We will have a staff member bring your child outside to your vehicle once you pull up to the front of the school.
Bus riders: All bus riders will be inside of the building while waiting for their bus to come. Students will have their glasses with them and put on their glasses once they are on the bus.
If parents or guardians have any questions or concerns about the plans above, please contact the building administration rather than your student's teacher.
Thank you,
Brittany Schob, Principal
