Marietta Junior High/High School Clubs
In addition to our daily academics and our athletic teams, we have a wide range of clubs available to students at both MES and MHS. You can read more about the options available with the descriptions below.
Students Solving Problems (SSP)/CRUSH
Advisor: Ray Costa (high school) and Shanaka Haney-McGowan (junior high)
Description: Students Solving Problems (SSP) is a student-led organization that attempts to recognize health-related issues/problems in our school and community and address them. The Junior High and High School have decided to partner and hold our meetings together. This partnership has been valuable with older students having a positive mentoring relationship with younger students while still allowing our younger students to have a voice in the process. Meetings consist of dialogue and brainstorming; students are often trying to decide what the needs are in our school (that are worthwhile to address) and how to best address them. The club’s goals include to increase student participation, to build student and staff relationships, and to decrease stress.

When are meetings: Meetings are in room 415 and are the first and third Thursdays of each month beginning October 5th, 2:45 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.
Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)/CRUSH
Advisor: Christy Boothby
Description (SADD): SADD also known as Students Against Destructive Decisions is a service club for students for destructive decisions. The club is most known for sponsoring Red Ribbon Week as well as other events. Members focus on the positives of Marietta High School trying to guide it in the right way. Most recently members painted the spirit rock for Women's History.
Grade levels: 9-12
When are meetings: Meetings are in the TMI center every other week on Tuesdays and consist of 3-6 members each meeting.
Interact Club
Advisor: Kirsten Goeller
Description: The Interact Club, also known as the Junior Rotary, focuses on volunteer work that can involve a wide variety of service projects at the local, national, or international levels.
Grade levels: 9-12
When are meetings: Meetings are held in room 218 on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 2:40-3:15 p.m.
Science Olympiad
Advisor: Chris Mayer
Description: Science Olympiad is a competition for 7th-12th grade students, where students compete in events ranging across all aspects of science and engineering. This includes building events, laboratory events, and test events. The club competes in a regional tournament at Marietta College in March, and depending on the results, members can compete at the state tournament in April.
Grade levels: 7-12
When are meetings: Meetings are in room 215 and dates are based on when works best for members in the club.
Power of the Pen
Advisor: Lexi Skinner
Description: Power of the Pen club is for Junior High students who have an interest in creative writing. Students will get coached on effective creative writing techniques, then they will have the chance to compete against other writers at district, regional, and state.
Grade levels: 7-8
When are meetings: Meetings are in room 413 and are every other Tuesday at 2:40 p.m.
Model UN
Advisor: Jade Thompson
Description: MUN is a great way to learn about Robert's Rules and the United Nations. It is also great for learning about world/global issues, poverty, and diplomacy. A student attending the MUN conference (members have gone to Cleveland for the past two years) must dress professionally and behave with good manners. Members also learn how to negotiate and make alliances. MUN took 12 students to Cleveland Case Western University on Feb. 28th and 29th of 2024. Students went up at 5:30 a.m. and returned at 4 p.m. on both days and although the students did not win any awards, they learned a lot and enjoyed themselves.
Grade levels: 9-12
When are meetings: Meetings start in November and go through late February and are held in room 219. The MUN conference is usually in late February. After the conference, the group has one more meeting to elect officers and then are finished for the year. MUN meets weekly or sometimes twice a week during that November-February time frame, depending on how preparations are going.
AFS/Foreign Exchange Student Club
Advisor: Jade Thompson
Description: AFS/Foreign Exchange Club provides students with fellowship and exchange with foreign exchange students. Bulletin board introductions are created as support for the exchange students with cultural differences, and members also help problem-solve with home/student life. The advisor, Jade Thompson, makes sure to do an orientation in the fall and she checks in with students as needed to see that their schedules are appropriate. She also introduces them at the Senior Awards Ceremony in the Spring, so they can have recognition in front of the school. These foreign exchange students also are honorary inductees into the National Honor Society and Thompson helps with that.

When are meetings: AFS Club exists to support and help the foreign exchange students. We meet as needed in room 219 (what time works best for members). It is a little bit complicated but the group tries to meet every quarter. The members have a welcome party and an orientation at the advisor’s house in August. In the past, the group has had Halloween Pumpkin carving parties and other fun things of that nature.
The advisor, Jade Thompson, speaks about the foreign exchange program in Marietta Schools. “We have a wonderfully supportive school that accepts foreign exchange students, which not all schools do. I have been a 10-time host parent and have volunteered for AFS as a coordinator and liaison for many years.”
Key Club
Advisor: Sally Latture
Description: Key Club is a student-led club of students composed of ninth through 12th graders. Key Club provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character, and develop leadership. Members welcome any student who would like to join and be an active member by participating in many of the projects that the club has throughout the year. Membership is $15 which pays for both international and state dues. This past school year, Key Club’s biggest accomplishment was organizing the winter formal with Interact Club and raising over $6,000 to give to the Gospel Food Mission. Most recently, members in Key Club helped city businesses move during the flood.

Environmental Club
Advisor: Amanda Warner
Description: Members work together to recycle and plan/join in on environmental-related events throughout the community. Every Tuesday, members meet in Mrs. Warner’s room after school and spend between 20-30 minutes going from floor to floor in groups and emptying the recycling bins inside each classroom. The club hopes to recruit many new members for next school year.

When are meetings: Meetings are in room 109 on Tuesdays during after-school hours.
Anime Club
Advisor: Victoria Slonaker
Description: Anime Club is welcome to all students in any grade level who wish to share their interest in Anime with like-minded peers.

When are meetings: Meetings are in room 200 from 2:40 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.
Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA)
Advisor: Susan Miller
Description: The GSA club is registered with the Ohio GSA Network. Members in GSA focus on support and fellowship as well as providing education to help create a more inclusive community at Marietta High School. Members also engage in some fundraising to support the club, to purchase t-shirts, and to donate to The Trevor Project.

When are meetings: Meetings are in room 108 on Mondays from 2:40 p.m until 3:30 p.m.
National Honor Society (invitation only)
Advisor: Kirsten Goeller
Description: Juniors and seniors with a cumulative grade point average of 3.6 after the first nine weeks are invited to fill out an application showcasing the 4 pillars of NHS: Character, Service, Scholarship, and Leadership. The Faculty Council evaluates these applications and accepted applicants get inducted in January.

When are meetings: Meetings are in room 218 and are monthly.
Student Council (election only)
Advisor: Amy Warren
Description: Members in student council make student life more enjoyable for students, using our leadership positions to do so. Members host big school events, such as tailgates, fun days, pep rallies, homecoming, and prom.
Grade levels: 9-12
When are meetings: Meetings are in room 207 and are on Mondays after school (must be elected to attend meetings).
Junior High Student Council
Advisor: Kelly Van Wey
Description: Similar to the high school student council, students in the Junior High Student Council discuss and organize school events that will benefit student life. Students are voted into leadership positions and in meetings, members brainstorm ideas for potential projects the club will work on throughout the school year.

When are meetings: Meetings are in room 417A and are based on need (TBD).
Dungeons and Dragons
Advisor: Robert Sheridan
Description: Members in this club meet in the TMI center and learn/participate in the roleplaying game, Dungeons and Dragons.
Grade levels: 7-12
When are meetings: Meetings are in the TMI center on Wednesdays.
Chess Club
Advisor: Amy Warren
Description: All students in grades 7-12 are invited to join chess club. Learn how to play, improve your skills, and participate in tournaments.

When are meetings: Meetings are on Thursdays after school in the TMI center.
Debate Club
Advisor: TBD
Description: Debate club members research a voted topic and then a few weeks later have an informal debate held by the advisor.

Builders Club
Advisor: Shanaka Haney-McGowan
Description: Builders Club is a student-led service organization for seventh and eighth graders. The students take pride in finding both small and large ways to impact our school and community. Meetings are often spent brainstorming ideas or completing smaller projects here at school. Members have tried to complete one large service project per month this school year in addition to the smaller things. Builders Club members can become Key Club members at the high school level and then Kiwanis members as adults, so this is truly an experience that can last a lifetime. Some larger projects the club has done include handmade cards for nursing homes, a Thanksgiving food drive for Gospel Mission, ringing bells for the Salvation Army, mini cards left in student lockers, serving at Pancake Days, a donation basket for Pancake Days, and Gospel Mission volunteer day.

Tri-M Music Honor Society (invitation only)
Advisor: Scott Rieder
Description: Membership in this club is by invitation only. Members must be active members in a curricular performing ensemble. Members in this club participate in community service, and volunteer activities, and help with choir and band events.
Grade levels: 9-12
When are meetings: Meetings are from 7:00 a.m. until 7:40 a.m. on the second Wednesday of each month in the choir room.
National Junior Honor Society (invitation only)
Advisor: Jade Thompson
Description: National Junior Honor Society members are selected from a council and are inducted into the club. Members help tutor students who need extra help and also participate in volunteer services throughout the school and community.

When are meetings: Meetings are on Tuesdays from 2:45 p.m. until 3:45 p.m.
Table Tennis Club
Advisor: Andrew Shu
Description: Table tennis can help students effectively exercise their eyesight, muscles, bounce, and reaction sensitivity in a relatively safe environment, it has a good exercise effect on student's response, balance, and coordination.

Yearbook
Advisor: Kirsten Goeller
Description: Students in this class take pictures during sporting games, club events, fine arts concerts, and students throughout the school. Members also design and edit pages for the school yearbook which are given to students after every school year.

When are meetings: There are no meetings because members have this class in room 217 during seventh period.
Go Grow Gardening Club
Advisor: Heather Warner
Description: Led by OSU Extension and hosted by the Pack & Go, the Go Grow Club is open to all students at MHS who want to learn more about growing plants. Students actively learn how to raise plants in traditional soil pots as well as in hydroponic and aquaponic systems. A mixture of edible plants and nonedible plants are raised throughout the school year. In addition, each club meeting includes a food tasting (usually produce) to expose students to new foods and encourage healthy food choices.

When are meetings: Meetings are in the Pack and Go Store on Wednesdays after school.
Go Cook Cooking Club
Advisor: Heather Warner
Description: The Go Cook Club is a hands-on cooking club open to all students at MHS and meets in the Pack & Go Store. At each club meeting, students prepare multiple recipes, incorporating various techniques. The focus of the club is to teach basic cooking skills and methods to prepare healthy, flavorful foods, and to provide students with their own collection of recipes and cooking manuals.

When are meetings: Meetings are in the Pack and Go Store on Wednesdays after school.
Math Club
Advisor: Mollie Schramm
Description: In Math Club, members are all about math! Members create fundraisers, do test prep, and compete in a math competition worldwide (this is optional). Members normally meet one Friday a month in Mrs. Schramm’s room and have snacks during every meeting. This club looks forward to your membership in the Math Club!
